Dyeing your hair is a fun way to change your look without making a permanent commitment. Highlights are especially popular because they allow you to experiment with different colors without having to dye your whole head of hair. Plus, they can be tailored to complement your natural hair color. If you’re thinking about getting highlights, consider visiting our team of expert stylists. They will be able to help you choose the right shade of dye and apply it expertly, ensuring that you love your new look.
While hair salon highlights are a very common method of altering hair color, there are numerous factors to take into account in order to ensure that your highlights yield the right look for you. At Womens Spa Salon, our team of expert stylists is here to guide you through the highlighting process. Here are a few considerations that may affect the methodology used to apply your highlights:
- Your skin tone. Whether your hair is light blonde, dark brown, or anywhere in between, it’s important that the shade of your highlights works well with your skin tone. For example, if you have warm undertones in your skin, it may be best to avoid warm hues in your highlights, as they could cause your skin to appear flushed. Instead, opt for cooler tones, like sandy or beige blondes. If you have olive skin, err on the side of buttery or honey blonde tones to add warmth to your skin. If your skin is neutral-toned with neither pink nor green undertones, you can probably rock either warm or cool blonde highlights.
- How much you want to lighten your hair. If you prefer a more natural look, opt for highlights that are no more than two or three shades lighter than your base color. Placing highlights closer together will create a lighter appearance overall.
- The technique used to apply your highlights. There are two main methods for applying hair salon highlights: foils and balayage. Foils tend to result in a more precise and symmetrical appearance, while balayage lightens hair in a more natural and subtle way—as if your hair has been sun-kissed. A major advantage of balayage is that it offers lower maintenance because there are no harsh lines between your roots and highlights.
- Use of lowlights. Lowlights—which involve dyeing strands darker than your base color—are often used in conjunction with highlights in order to create a sense of volume, depth, and texture. Lowlights are also helpful in bridging the gap between light highlights and a darker base color. However, they may not be recommended if you already have very dark hair, or if you have very light hair and want to transition to a dark color—in that case, a full-head color may work best.
